Why Boomtown Fair?
One thing’s for sure, Boomtown Fair ain’t a quaint village knees-up! Some might call it an ‘arts and music festival’ but that’s a rotten understatement. To get an idea of what Boomtown Fair really is, open to your mind and jump down this rabbit hole:
Buried deep in the Hampshire countryside, eleven intricately built districts take you on a mind-bending journey through fictional Boomtown city, founded by fictional gold prospector Nikolas Boom, who was unfortunately usurped a few years ago by tyrannical alien forces, who themselves are now facing a people's revolt. Fair to say this fair goes one better than gingham wrapped jams and bobbing for apples.
The elaborate scene has a whiff of Nevada’s post-apocalyptic love-in Burning Man, Luc Besson’s sci-fi classic Fifth Element, the exotic military-fantasia of Pan’s Labyrinth, the pounding rhythm of Rio’s carnival, the seething back alleys of early 20th century Hong Kong and the wild stage presence of gypsy punks Gogol Bordello. As I said, Boomtown Fair requires an open mind, even before you get there!
Depart From Reality; Enter Boomtown Escapism.
Clearly, Boomtown Fair transcends the standard model of a summer music festival, with its troupe of actors all playing their part in the mysterious Boomtown Chronicles, but the festival organisers haven’t neglected the line-up...
Brace yourself for a staggering 25 main stages and 80 intimate street venues nestled in every nook and cranny of Boomtown city. The line-up is as intriguing and multifaceted as the whole Boomtown mythos, ranging from ska institution the Skatalites to legendary producer, ethnomusicologist and BBC6 DJ Gilles Peterson.
I recommend putting a whole day aside to scroll through the A-Z of acts on the festival website!
