The Spectacular Esala Perahera Festival
If you've never, ever experienced of The Festival of the Tooth, then you're in for one elepha time!
The Spectacular Esala Perahera Festival in Kandy - the ancient royal capital of Sri Lanka - is one of the oldest, most extraordinary and noisy festivals in the world.
Every July and August, thousands of local dancers, drummers, musicians, Indiana Jones-style whip-crackers, fire-eaters and Buddhist monks snake their way around Kandy Lake, accompanied by 100 elephants. Yes! 100 of them beautiful Pachyderms. Why? Well, tradition dictates the largest elephant carries a sacred tooth relic (taken from The Buddha’s funeral pyre almost 2500 years ago) to the Temple of the Tooth.
So, that's one night of partying and spirituality taken care of, but what about those famous white sanded beach resorts, wildlife parks, whale-watching excursions and boutique hotels?
There's a whole lot more to Sri Lanka.
Yes. If there's more to your cup of chai than singing, dancing, partying and parading with elephants, don't worry - you'll also get to see the rest of this miraculous island.
After your time in Kandy, you'll explore Sri Lanka's white-sanded, tropical jungle bays which punctuate the south coast like Sanskrit. Further inland, Tea Country provides opportunities for cool, gentle walks among the verdant hills. In the north, the Cultural Triangle showcases the country's fascinating history with ancient ruins, ornate cave temples and logic-defying sacred sites. You'll visit Polonnaruwa, the Dambulla Cave Temples and the dramatic sky citadel of Sigiriya. After these action-packed few days, you'll rest up on the East Coast in wonderful Trincomalee before visiting vibrant and energetic Colombo.
There are literally too many incredible highlights to mention including stunning UNESCO heritage sites, wildlife-rich national parks, jaguars and whale-watching! But one of our favourite things about this trip is you get to choose your own hotels. Fancy modern boutique chic? Then secrete yourself into the ultra-tasteful Kahanda Kanda near Galle. You need peace and quiet? Then cosy down at a luxury lodge in picturesque Tea Country or the iconic Kandalama Hotel. You want ultra-sexy? Check out the Amanwella, or if you require family-friendly then choose the Anantara Peace Haven.
