Follow in Marco Polo's Footsteps - The Silk Road
From the title, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is two weeks of playing the American, blindfolded hide-and-seek game “Marco Polo” but instead, this amazing holiday gives you the opportunity to actually follow Marco Polo's Silk Road Route.
This thirteen-day tour will take you back in time to China’s northwestern Gansu and Xinjiang Provinces - two oases on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Once a frontier garrison on the Silk Road, the area is influenced by the cultures of Russia and Mongolia to the north, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to the west and Tibet and India to the south.
The Silk Road is the ancient trade route that linked East and West and features a spectacular journey through rugged mountain sceneries, deserts and bazaar towns. From grottoes covered with mural paintings in Dunhuang and Kuqa to the bustling bazaars of Kashgar and Urumqi…
Silk Road Highlights
Your trip begins in UNESCO-protected Dunhuang, known today for the perfectly persevered Mogao Caves, a complex of five hundred grottoes adorned with 4th Century, Wei Dynasty, Buddhist statues and frescoes. You’ll travel to see the Crescent Moon Lake and Mingsha Shan - sand dunes that sing as the wind caresses them.
