Why Palacio de Sal?

Palacio de Sal is a hotel made entirely out of salt.

You read that right. Salt isn’t just something you sprinkle onto your fish and chips, it’s a legitimate building material.

Especially in Bolivia in the world’s largest salt flat of Salar de Uyuni. Other building materials are scarce in the area but, as you’d expect, salt is in ready supply.

But Really... It's Made From Salt.

The building includes a bar, restaurant, spa, and 16 private rooms with igloo-style domed salt roofs. The design is highly unique, and we’d bet that not even the most “seasoned” travellers can say they’ve slept in a bed made from salt before (see what we did there?) inside pool at palacio de sal

And before you get any ideas… don’t even think about it. Licking the walls is strictly forbidden. It’s not just so they can sell you more salty snacks, either, it’s to prevent degradation of the architecture.

Though we do wonder how many people had to try it before the hotel was forced to come up with that rule.

In Short:

  • Amazing architecture. Yes, the whole place is made from salt.
  • You can't lick the walls, but that's OK: there's plenty of good food to eat.
  • Luxury accommodation.
  • Experience the beauty of Bolivia in a totally unique way.
